Dr. Brian Lawrence
Dr. Brian Lawrence, PH.D

Dr. Brian M. Lawrence was born in London, England, where he eventually worked as both a technician and as a chromatography lab manager in the pharmaceutical industry while pursuing a degree in Chemistry. In 1960, he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study chemistry in Chicago where he also worked at numerous labs before leaving his university studies to return to the industry. He later obtained his doctorate in pharmacognosy at the State University in Groningen, the Netherlands while working full time in Canada. Dr. Lawrence served as a researcher and the director of research and development until he retired in 2003. He then started a consultancy business, which continues to this day. He has published in excess of 80 original articles and reports and has been the scientific editor and natural products editor of the Perfumer and Flavorist for over 30 years. Dr. Lawrence has also published 13 books and 18 book chapters on essential oils while acting as senior editor for the proceedings of the 10th International Congress of Essential Oils, Flavors, and Fragrances. In 1989, he founded the Journal of Essential Oil Research and was editor-in-chief until January 2010. He remains on the JEOR editorial board.

Dr. William Setzer, PH.D

Will Setzer was born in Los Angeles, California. He received the B.S. degree in Chemistry from Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, California, in 1973, and the Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Arizona, Tucson, in 1981 under the direction of Professor Richard S. Glass. He was a Postdoctoral Associate in the laboratory of Wesley G. Bentrude at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, and an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow, Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, with Prof. Dr. Paul von Ragué Schleyer. Will started his academic career at the University of Alabama in Huntsville as Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry in 1985. He rose through the ranks to Professor and Chair of the Chemistry Department, and he is currently Professor Emeritus. Although he has always had a casual interest in plants, ethnobotany, and herbal medicines, Will’s research in natural products started in 1990 after a trip to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve in Costa Rica. In addition to Costa Rica, Will’s bioprospecting trips have taken him and his students to north Queensland, Australia, and the Bahamas, and he has formed several fruitful collaborations with groups in Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Cuba, Brazil, the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Africa. His research interests are in natural products drug discovery, essential oils, chemical ecology, and molecular modeling.

Dr. Prabodh Satyal, PH.D

Dr. Prabodh Satyal is originally from Nepal where he worked as a lecturer in organic chemistry at Kathmandu University. He moved to the United States to pursue research in essential oils at the University of Alabama, where he received his MS and Ph.D. in essential oil research. He has studied the chemical composition of more than 10,000 essential oils from various parts of the world, has published more than 100 research articles in peer reviewed journals, and is also an editorial member of several journals. Prabodh has a special interest in essential oil adulteration detection using marker based analysis and has created the only known mass spectral library of synthetic markers. He has played a significant role in establishing several essential oil databases and has spoken at ten reputable international conferences. He is currently developing the first ever fully automated adulteration analysis software for GCMS that will identify the percentage of purity, origin, and mixed sources in essential oils.
